According to the publication, the scaling of workshops, warehouses and repair facilities is an attempt by the enemy to minimize dependence on strategically important raw materials (carbon fiber) necessary for the manufacture of airframes and other components and localize their assembly on its territory.

The increase in such capacities can ensure the production of additional 28 thousand jet drones annually for attacks on Ukrainian cities. Currently, Russia is capable of producing more than 36,000 Shahed/Geranium-type kamikaze drones per year.

The Alabuga-Volokno plant is a key node of the military-industrial chain and the only carbon fiber producer in the Russian Federation, which provides high strength with minimal weight during the manufacture of fuselages for long-range drones.

Details

As Serhii Kuzan, head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, notes in a commentary for Politico, the expansion of Alabuga-Volokna is a threat not only for the Ukrainian front. Localization of production allows Russia to accumulate a strategic reserve of UAVs for potential use against Western countries.

Context

As Ukrinform reported earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the Security Service of Ukraine on Saturday, September 19, successfully used the Ukrainian interceptor against the Geran-5 jet drone twice.

The publication says that the Alabuga-Volokno plant plans to produce an additional 500 tons of aerospace carbon fiber for military purposes annually by 2029.
