The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, Spain, has received works by four Ukrainian artists. — Ukrinform.

Works by four Ukrainian artists join the collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid

A large-scale transfer of contemporary art to the state museum fund of Spain was carried out by the private foundation TBA21.

The museum received the work of Open World (2025) by Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei, as well as the series "Revisionist Syndrome" (2021) by Nikita Kadan, consisting of 55 drawings.

On the terms of a long-term deposit, the museum will also receive "Through the Looking Glass" (2008–2009) by Pavel Makov and "Reconstructed Weapons: Tiger Jump" (2018) by Kadan.

The total value of the transferred assets is estimated at almost 100 million euros. In addition to Ukrainian artists, the state museum fund of Spain includes the works of Ai Weiwei, Maryna Abramovych, Olafur Eliasson, Pierre Hugues, Bill Viola and other artists.

Context

In 2026, the museum, together with TBA21, also presented the exhibition "Pedagogics of War" by Malashchuk and Khimei. The exposition lasted from March 3 to June 21 and explored the impact of the war on perception, behavior and social life.

TBA21 (Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary) was founded in 2002 by collector and philanthropist Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza. In 2019, the foundation opened its headquarters in Madrid and began to work more closely with the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum.

What's next

To accommodate the new works, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum plans to expand its exhibition space. For contemporary art, a second location will be opened in the historic Palacio del Hielo y del Automóvil building next to the main museum building.
