From now on, no country that the United States considers its adversary will be able to deploy a military base in Greenland or invest in strategically important sectors without Washington's express written permission.

He also announced his intention to immediately begin preparations for the expansion of the US military presence on the island.

Context

Recall that in 2004, the United States and Denmark concluded an additional agreement on the defense of Greenland.

The European Commission has reportedly launched a search for new premises in Greenland's capital Nuuk following the EU's announcement of a €200 million investment package in the Arctic region.

According to Politico, the agreement is expected to be signed next week in New York during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week.

This document will replace the 1951 agreement that gave the United States the right to station military forces in Greenland. Its provisions should prevent China and Russia from carrying out relevant activities on the island.
