The wind speed during the typhoon reached 144 km/h when it was at a distance of about 110 km from the island of Hachijojima — one of the most remote islands belonging to Tokyo Prefecture.
Heavy rains have already hit parts of the Izu Islands and Chiba Prefecture, bordering Tokyo, over the weekend.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned of a possible rapid deterioration in weather conditions.
“Total rainfall through Tuesday could exceed the monthly average for September, resulting in record rainfall,” the JMA said.
Authorities have also warned of the possibility of linear rain strips over central Japan and the Kanto region (which includes Tokyo and neighboring prefectures). This increases the risk of natural disasters associated with precipitation, including flash floods and landslides.
