Especially careful should be people for whom even a small foot injury may pose an increased risk.
When they come home, many first of all take off their shoes and walk barefoot until the end of the day. However, hard floors, tiles, or laminate barely cushion the load on the feet.
So is it useful to walk barefoot at home, or is it better to wear slippers? Doctors say that there is no unambiguous answer: such a habit has both advantages and certain risks.
One of the main advantages of walking without shoes, experts call the work of the musclesof the feet. Clinical podiatrist Robert Conenello explains that walking barefoot helps strengthen the internal muscles of the foot.
Themusclesof the feet may gradually weaken, and the constant wearing of shoes to some extent limits their natural work. At the same time, the condition of the feet is directly related to our ability to move normally.
When a person walks barefoot, the feet come into direct contact with the surface, and the muscles adapt more actively to movement.
Walking barefoot also allows the skin to “breathe.” Dermatologist Hannah Kopelman notes that the lack of shoes and socks can reduce moisture buildup, and therefore create a favorable environment for fungal infections.
